What does Medicare insurance cover?
Now, let’s break down what Medicare insurance typically covers. Think of it as a buffet of services that cater to your health needs:
- Hospital Stays: Those nights in the hospital can add up, but Medicare has got your back.
- Medical Procedures: From routine check-ups to unexpected surgeries, you’re covered.
- Prescription Drugs: Medications don’t have to break the bank.
- Preventive Services: Keeping you healthy with regular screenings and vaccines.
Medicare Part A (Hospital insurance):
Deductible:
- $1,736 for each benefit period. A benefit period begins the day you’re admitted as an inpatient and ends when you haven’t received inpatient care for 60 consecutive days. There’s no limit to the number of benefit periods you can have in a year.
Inpatient hospital Stays:
- Days 1-60: After paying the $1,736 deductible, Medicare covers the full cost of your hospital stay for these days.
- Days 61-90: You pay a daily coinsurance of $434 per day.
- Days 91-150: These are considered “lifetime reserve days.” You have a total of 60 lifetime reserve days to use over your lifetime. For each of these days, you pay a coinsurance of $868 per day. Once these 60 days are exhausted, you are responsible for all costs beyond day 90 in any benefit period.
- Medicare
Medicare Part B (Medical insurance):
Deductible:
- $283 annually. Before Medicare starts to pay its share, you must meet this deductible each year.
After meeting the deductible:
- You typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most doctor services (including most doctor services while you’re a hospital inpatient), outpatient therapy, and durable medical equipment.
- Medicare
Summary of coverage from day 1 to day 150:
- Days 1-60: After the $1,736 deductible, Medicare covers all approved charges.
- Days 61-90: You pay $434 per day in coinsurance.
- Days 91-150: Using lifetime reserve days, you pay $868 per day in coinsurance.
- After Day 150: You are responsible for all costs, as Medicare coverage does not extend beyond 150 days in a benefit period without lifetime reserve days.
It’s essential to note that these costs can add up significantly. Some beneficiaries opt for Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies to help cover these out-of-pocket expenses. Additionally, Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) may offer different cost structures and benefits. It’s advisable to review your options annually during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period to ensure you have coverage that best fits your needs.
